Marco Rubio files bills cracking down on Iran, Russia

Friday, February 17th, 2017

Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio announced Friday that he is sponsoring a pair of bills to crack down on Iran and Russia.
Rubio, along with Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn, Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse and Georgia Republican Sen. David Perdue, filed a bill to crack down on Iran’s use of commercial aircraft in support of terrorism.
The Iran Terror-Free Skies Act would require the executive branch to regularly report to Congress on whether Iran has used civilian planes for military purposes, such as transporting weapons or military personnel, to terrorist groups within its borders or abroad.
“As the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism, Iran continues to systematically use its commercial airlines to supply the murderous Assad regime in Syria as well as to Hezbollah and other foreign terrorist organizations,” Rubio said. “If America turns a blind eye to the Iranian terror regime’s efforts to destabilize the Middle East and endanger the lives of innocents worldwide, we risk being complicit.”
The Miami Republican also joined up with Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton and Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson on a bill to bring Russia back into compliance with the INF missile treaty.
“Russia’s mounting violations of the INF Treaty, including testing and now brazenly deploying ground-launched cruise missiles with intermediate range, pose grave threats to the United States and our European allies,” Rubio said. “This legislation makes clear that Russia will face real consequences if it continues its dangerous and destabilizing behavior.”
The bill includes provisions to build up missile defense and place intermediate range missile systems within allied countries, among other things.
Texas Republican Rep. Ted Poe and Alabama Republican Rep. Mike Rodgers are sponsoring the bill’s House companion.

Kathy Castor calls Donald Trump order on refugees ‘illegal, immoral and un-American’

Sunday, January 29th, 2017

Democrats across Florida are blasting President Donald Trump‘s executive order, which suspends for 120 days the entry of all refugees from certain Muslim countries to the United States.
The order, signed Friday, bands Syrian refugees indefinitely, and for 90 days, it blocks entry into the U.S. for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
Among those speaking out is Kathy Castor of Tampa.
“President Trump’s executive order targeting and banning legal permanent residents and refugees from war-torn areas is illegal, immoral and un-American.  It has made us less safe.  If the president wants to empower jihadists, this is the way to do it,” Castor said Sunday.
Castor said she is in contact with local refugee assistance agencies to monitor circumstances of families who may have been in transit when Trump signed his executive order late Friday afternoon. She vows to “do everything possible to ensure America continues to provide safe haven to victims of torture and persecution as our country has done since its founding.”
Castor called Trump’s temporary ban “outrageous,” adding that banning Muslims, Iraqis and others who have assisted the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan will empower the terrorists.
“Facts matter,” she said. “Trump is taking our country down a dangerous path based on disinformation and discrimination.”
Meanwhile, Debbie Wasserman Schultz has also taken exception to the timing of Trump’s executive order, coming on the same day the administration sent out a statement commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day without mentioning Jews or antisemitism.
The South Florida Democrat called that omission “insensitive, disappointing and trampled on the memory of the 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazi’s during the Holocaust.”
“As a representative of tens of thousands of immigrants, I will stand with my immigrant and non-immigrant constituents and fight this unconstitutional and immoral policy with every ounce of energy I have,” Wasserman Schultz said of the temporary ban. “As the granddaughter of immigrants who fled persecution

Mac Stipanovich: Win or lose, Never Trump movement remains proud

Monday, October 31st, 2016

With Donald Trump still down in the polls with a week to go, the edifice of excuses designed to excuse his potential defeat is being hurried to completion.
To the foundation stones of voter fraud and a mainstream media conspiracy his campaign manager recently added treason, alleging that if Trump loses it will be in large part because he was stabbed in the back by the Never Trump renegades in the GOP.
That is a baldfaced lie. Never Trump did not stab Trump in the back. They stabbed him in the front.
Because Trump is a Republican only in the same sense that the Visigoths who sacked Rome were Romans, a relative handful of actual conservatives in the GOP adamantly opposed him from the moment he descended from on high, riding his Trump Tower escalator, armored in ignorance and spewing venomous bigotry and public policy nonsense.
They would not collaborate in pursuing what they believe would be a Pyrrhic victory, both for the GOP and for the country, if Trump is elected President.
Instead, to their honor and to the shame of all those who did collaborate — all the sycophants, front-runners, apologists, ambition-addled and faint of heart — they resisted.
And they lost. Then they lost some more.
Some, like George Will, Mary Matalin and Sally Bradshaw, long-time pillars of the GOP, gave up and left the Party altogether, disgusted and demoralized. But others, like Senators Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Jeff Flake of Arizona, and Mike Lee of Utah, soldiered on.
Here in Florida, Hispanic leaders like U.S. Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Carlos Curbelo from Miami are unflinching in their opposition to the Trump candidacy for obvious reasons, and they are seconded by others around the state made of similarly stern stuff, like Will Weatherford, former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, and Rick Wilson, a

New Hillary Clinton ad shows Republicans criticizing Donald Trump

Sunday, September 11th, 2016

Hillary Clinton is letting Republicans make the case against Donald Trump in a new TV ad.
The 30-second spot, called “Agree,” features clips of several prominent Republicans — including Sens. Lindsey Graham, Ben Sasse, and Jeff Flake, and 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney — speaking out against Trump. The ad shows several Republicans saying they cannot support Trump for president.
“I just cannot support Donald Trump,” the ad shows Sen. Susan Collins saying, before the words “Unfit. Dangerous. Even for Republicans” appear on the screen.
According to the Clinton campaign, Clinton “demonstrated her ability to work across the aisle to get things done” as a senator and the secretary of state.
The new TV ad will be part of an already existing broadcast and cable ad campaign in Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and the Omaha media markets.
