Saturday, November 7, 2026 — The Miami Metropolis daily briefing: the day’s lead story and Miami’s weather in one place. A sunny, warm weekend is ahead for South Florida, king-tide flooding lingers through Sunday evening, and today’s lead is the sentencing of a Kenyan doomsday cult leader.
Today’s Lead Story: Leader of Kenyan Doomsday Cult Sentenced to 200 Years in Prison
The leader of a Kenyan doomsday cult linked to the deaths of hundreds of people has been sentenced to 200 years in prison for the murders of 191 people. The High Court in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa issued the sentence on Friday for Pastor Paul Mackenzie — 100 years for murder by starvation and a further 100 years for direct homicide, to run consecutively. Of the 191 victims in this case, 190 were children, most of them starved in the Shakahola forest after Mackenzie preached that fasting was the path to heaven ahead of the end of the world. Mackenzie, 50, will never leave prison, and he still faces terrorism, manslaughter, child abuse and torture charges in other courts over more than 200 additional victims.
