Today’s Lead Story: Broward Sheriff Took $65,000 From a Training Firm — Then Pitched the State to Fund It
There is a simple rule in public life: if a company is paying you, you do not walk into a government meeting and ask that government to fund the company — and if you do, you say the company is paying you, out loud, before you make the pitch. Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony appears to have done the opposite. According to a Florida Bulldog investigation published November 1, Tony was paid $65,000 last year by the Opioid Training Institute, a for-profit company that sells online opioid-crisis courses to first responders. Then, on March 31, he stood before Florida’s Statewide Council on Opioid Abatement and urged support for a $3 million statewide pilot program built around that same company’s training — without mentioning the $65,000. The council meets again November 4, and this editorial argues the pilot should not move until the sheriff publicly explains the payment.

Miami Weather: Coastal Flood Advisory Until 7 PM Tonight, Rip Currents Through Wednesday Morning
A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for coastal Miami-Dade until 7:00 PM EST this evening (NWS Miami, issued 2:20 AM EST Tuesday) — minor to moderate coastal flooding is possible around high tides, with flooding of lots, parks and roads and only isolated road closures expected. A high rip current risk is in effect through Wednesday morning (10:00 AM EST), with large breaking waves of up to 6 feet in the surf zone and dangerous rip currents — swim only near a lifeguard. The Flood Watch that covered South Florida through Monday evening has expired and is no longer in effect.
